Nobody wants to be a drug addict or alcoholic but this certainly doesn't prevent people from getting addicted. A commonly asked question is usually, how? How could my daughter, my son, my father, my brother, or sister become a thief, a liar, someone that cannot be trusted? How could this happen? And why on earth don't they stop?!?!
The thing you must understand about drug addiction is that addictive drugs and alcohol are basically painkillers. They chemically kill physical or emotional pain and alter the mind's perception of reality. They make the person numb or "better". For drugs to be attractive to people there must first be some underlying unhappiness, sense of hopelessness or physical pain.
